The device consists of a metal ball on a chain and a metal ring.
The ring and ball are mounted on a tripod.

The dimensions of the ring and the ball are chosen so that the ball passes freely through the ring when their temperatures are equal.

If the ball is heated so that its temperature becomes greater than the temperature of the ring by at least 80° C, the ball gets stuck in the ring and stays on it until thermal equilibrium occurs.
